Suspects Sam Wilson and James E Karayeines were arrested and pleaded not guilty while a third man confessed to smuggling nine pounds. The operation aimed to use Houston as a key entry port for illegal drugs.
Rescue workers in Mahanoy City Pennsylvania dig through rock coal and dirt to reach brothers Edward Borda 25 and Joseph Borda 30 trapped 120 and 60 feet underground at the New Boston colliery Morea. Charles 23 escaped with leg cuts. Faint rail tapping ceased after 5 pm. Authorities push air pipe despite rock obstructions as search continues.
A school bus carrying Michigan Tech hockey players home from a win was sideswiped by a Greyhound bus on an icy highway near Gaylord Michigan. Four people were killed and 30 injured. Coroner reports two bus occupants dead and a child and a man from the Greyhound also killed. Greyhound says driver was following a snow plow when the buses skidded and collided.
East Harris County gears up for the annual March of Dimes fundraising drive led by Co-Chairmen Wilton A. Roper and D. Middleton. The campaign runs through January 31 with Baytown area volunteers handling mailing and folders for 6500 Baytown families.

Barney Ward named president of the Pioneer Club in Baytown. Ward has 33 years with Humble Oil and Refining Company, began in 1916, and has worked in Baytown since 1927 after earlier moves between Humble fields and Ingleside. New officers include Boullion, Bryant, and Yownt with a board headed by Taylor, Ulch, and Van Meldert.
Funeral services for Silas Henry Killian 65 of Mont Belvieu will be held Sunday at 2 36 pm at the Paul G Lee Funeral Home with Rev Bruce O Power and Rev Ben F Roper officiating. Killian a field superintendent for Atlantic Pipe Line Company at Mont Belieu for 19 years died Friday morning. Survivors include wife Edna Killian two sons H Killian Jr and two daughters Mrs L R Hill Baytown and Mrs W L Thomas New Orleans, a mother Mrs L M Killian Baytown and sister Mrs Charles S Chase Houston. Pallbearers listed.
Carl 3. Smith Harris County tax assessor will deputize 23 poll tax collectors for East Harris County in Baytown at 10 am Monday. Demand for poll tax receipts has risen sharply. two more deputies were chosen, and additional help will be found by Monday. Deputy wrangling includes A J Wood at the Baytown Refinery lab and J F Felton for McNair and Baytown Negro sections.
Anchorage dispatch reports forty eight tons of gold valued at 56 million dollars flown from Free China to prevent capture by Communists. Planes carried over 13 500 pounds of metal on hazardous North Pacific routes from Tokyo stopping at Shemya. Troops surrounded each landing and crews refrained from talking. Cargo reportedly unloading at Oakland and moving to the New York Federal Reserve Bank by rail.

Funeral services for Abe Bemel a 46 year old Baytown businessman will be held Monday at 11 am at Pipkin Brulin Funeral Home Beaumont. Rabbi Samuel Schwartz and Rabbi Solomon officiate burial in Jewish Orthodox Cemetery. Survived by wife Ida a daughter Betty and son Jerry Frankis both UT students. He operated Tri City Auto Wrecking on Highway 146 and moved to Baytown nine years ago.
W M House Jewelry on Texas Avenue reports over $2000 in watches stolen and a $150 glass window smashed in a burglary. Police place the crime between 6 and 6:20 am as an employee discovers the break at 6:20. Fingerprints taken from the broken window and watch cases.
Fifteen survivors of the Truculent submarine testified before a five man naval inquiry at Chatham to detail the collision that killed 64 crewmen. The board will also question crew of the Swedish tanker Divina, which rammed the sub in the Thames Estuary.
Janet Houston says her husband, a 41 year old boat pilot, was murdered not an accident. She tells reporters she is certain he did not die by chance and urges further investigation into the death of the Norwegian tanker Ultra Galveston Bay off a rope ladder incident two weeks ago.
