The district continues a high school program begun last spring that allows students who pass all courses and have no more than two absences to be exempt from final exams. Exemptions are also given to students with A averages. Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Elmer Thompson reported on the district's athletic program to the board.
Police chase ends on Interstate 10 with arrests after a Pay-Less Beauty Supply robbery in Baytown. Officer Huffman and Cadet Ausley died. gunmen Carroll Watson and Spencer killed. Witness Donny Voelkel, son of the city manager, described the confrontation. Henry Grover scheduled as guest on KWBA radio.
Amid a levee breach near Benton's and Bays' properties, a horse and both men fell into the water. Sheriff reports one man Benton died, another named Bays escaped. The body was recovered about 200 feet from the fall point at 5:45 p.m. The inquest labeled the death accidental drowning. A local school trustee and medical staff associated with the Galveston area are noted in the surrounding report.

Services for Ronnie Lee Benton 30 of Dayton were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sterling Funeral Chapel. The Baytown man drowned while trying to recover cattle in a marsh west of Anahuac on Long Island Bayou. Survivors include his wife Judy, parents Mr. and Mrs. Leonard E. Benton, two brothers, and a sister. Burial followed at Ryan Cemetery under Sterling Funeral Home arrangements.
