Baytown Finance Director J. B. LeFevre announced the city received a quarterly sales tax check of 310,079.52 for the quarter ending Sept. 30, the largest in five years. The city posted a record 1,125,004.74 for the last budget year and 4,492,663.40 total since 1970.
Commissioner Jim Fontena says Harris County will study a possible walkway across the West Main bridge at Goose Creek Stream if economically feasible. He rules out building atop the nearby pipeline and notes any route must be wide enough for pedestrians and bicycles. West Main is a county road within the city.
A wave of deadly tornadoes swept four states causing at least 13 deaths and about 200 injuries. McComb Mississippi suffered the worst hit with many homes and a school destroyed. other towns including Ruth and Opelousas reported fatalities as storms damaged Lake Charles and Baton Rouge areas. A crewman is missing after a tug boat capsize on Lake Pontchartrain. Alabama reported two storm related deaths.
The Heritage Committee plans a volunteer desk at the Baytown Community Building beginning Monday. Mrs. Jean Shepherd leads the desk to answer questions about Baytown’s role in the 200th birthday celebration and to accept suggestions. Mrs. Eileen Caftey serves as chairman of the project.
Volunteers including Jane Archer, Shirley Houston, Leona Chapman, Suzi Brown, Tommie Ein kahuf and Jayne Slatkin join reserve staff Edra Schutze, Marilyn Scott, Carol Shanks, Linda Herring and Kay Bednarski to support a Bicentennial desk through July 4, 1976. Mrs Shepherd notes the post will handle calendars, mail routing, and emblem contest entries.
Forecaster warns of a freeze Saturday night and cooler conditions Sunday in the Baytown area. Low Saturday night near 30 degrees, high Sunday in the mid 30s. Tides Sunday include highs at 3:21 a.m. and 10:38 p.m. and lows at 1:27 a.m. and 2:41 p.m. Tides Monday list highs at 6:06 a.m. and 11 p.m. with low at 1:52 a.m. and 1:14 p.m. Weak tide noted.
