National Farmers Group Demands Price Increase

Corning Iowa AP The National Farmers Organization announced its members have begun an all commodity market withholding action starting with grain to force a rise in farm prices. NFC President Oren Lee Staley said the plan will stagger withholding from meat milk and other commodities to maximize market impact. He cited grain holding targets of 1.50 a bushel for corn 2.25 per hundredweight for feed grains and similar for other grains. The plan draws on past withholding actions in 1962 1964 and milk protests in 1968 with legal pushback from the Justice Department and government briefings to officials prior to the move.

All First Class Letters Sent By Air By 6-Cent Rate

Washington AP reports Post Office plans to drop air mail as a separate service and send all first class letters by air at a six cent rate. Postmaster General Lawrence F O'Brien says the system already functions as a near total airlift with 300 cities connected. He notes 75 percent of mail deposited before 5 pm arrives next day and 90 percent within two days, while a 10 cent airmail stamp still guarantees air transport until a single class priority service is established. In 1969 Congress will be asked to merge airmail and first class into one priority service.
