Afghanistan Faces Critical Review of Foreign Aid Use
Kabul reporting on Afghanistan's foreign aid shows $1.3 billion received from East and West nations, with $600 million from the Soviet Union and over $400 million from the United States. Experts warn aid has spurred dependency, hindered local tax collection, and failed to generate self sustaining development. The new prime minister Mohammed Musa Shafiq seeks to reform government and direct development, promising tighter revenue collection and an economic task force.
