Man leads authorities on 20 mile chase through Chambers County
A man with 35 pounds of marijuana in a 1994 Toyota led a high speed chase across rural Chambers County, reaching 120 mph before authorities spiked a tire in Jefferson County. He abandoned the car in a front yard and fled on foot before being captured. The suspect, Samuel Lamar Peterson, 27, of Pensacola, Florida, remained in custody as authorities reviewed charges.

Mean Gene Kelton death not alcohol related police say
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled out alcohol as a factor in the Dec. 28 fatal crash that killed music legend Mean Gene Kelton. Kelton, 57, from Baytown, died when his Ford Explorer hit a Crosby ISD school bus on FM 2100 near Tall Cedars Street. Funeral is at 6 p.m. today at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown.

Prescribed burn blamed for Monday marsh haze spread far
Chambers County officials said a Monday prescribed burn on the Moody National Wildlife Refuge grew larger than expected. Bulldozers and equipment worked to suppress the fire while the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was notified. Smoke traveled along I 45 reaching Dickinson and League City and blanketed much of Galveston County. Residents reported breathing difficulties and the smoke from about 2 a.m. Monday. National Weather Service satellite imagery helped pinpoint the origin.
