Patterson sworn in as Texas land commissioner

Republican former state Senator Jerry Patterson of Austin was sworn in as Texas land commissioner on Friday replacing David Dewhurst. Cat helps sixth grader wake family as house catches fire

In Lakewood a fire erupted in a home on S Burnet. Thirteen year old Melanie Matthews woke to her cat Pebbles scratching her and alerting others. Fire units arrived to extinguish the blaze causing about 10000 dollars in damage.

Christmas tree curbside pickup begins in Baytown

Baytown's Solid Waste Division starts curbside Christmas tree collection on Monday. Crews will work during the weeks of January 6 and January 13, collecting live trees after removing stands ornaments and lights to avoid chipper damage. Citywide pickup lasts two weeks and last year recycled 1,600 trees. For details contact Public Works at 281 420 5300.
