Demands From 30000 Railroad Workers For Higher Wages
Cleveland AP reports the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen demanded wage hikes for about 30 000 locomotive helpers and related workers on roughly 190 railroads. The union seeks a 25 percent base wage increase plus a cost of living adjustment, shift differentials, pension improvements, and other gains. Also seeks 25 percent hikes in arbitraries and allowances, new five day job notice, double time for extended service, better lodging and meals, and higher daily minimums across freight, passenger and yard service. Existing rates vary by role and service. The push includes restoration of fired workers after arbitration ends March 31 and stems from a 1963 wage settlement retroactive to 1964.
