Baytown's 1972 Ends With Big Changes In Leadership
Baytown's year featured city hall leadership shifts and a late surge of projects. City Manager Friz Lanham returned after a two year absence, replacing D R Voelkel amid criticism, while Fire Chief James Bland resigned after a long dispute. major contracts followed for a new police station and water and road improvements, and a bond program advanced after federal funding. The year also saw the Ross Sterling Rangers reach state finals the first time in 20 years and Humble Enjay rebranding to Exxon with a new building on Decker Drive. A January Bay Plaza shootout wounded officers, two robbers died, and the city opened a new medical center, twin theaters, and a growing business district along Highway 146. Substantial regional events included the Bilderdyk port move to Morgan's Point, Crosby School District bond success, and local subsidence efforts with elevated roads and water mains around Brownwood peninsula. City tax rate cut and new bus purchases by Lee College capped a year of major shifts.
