An Editorial on New Year’s Day Origins and arbitrariness
The piece argues there is little planetary significance to January 1 as New Year. It notes ancient calendars aligned with seasonal events, while Britain and the colonies used March 25 under the Julian system until mid 18th century. It suggests January 1 is a modern convention, with different implications in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

The Reason We Welcome New Year’s Day
The essay argues January 1 is chosen as a calendar start partly from history and fiscal year timing, yet New Year’s Day resonates because it occurs with Christmas and stirs memories of goodwill. It notes the season prompts reflection, debt settling, and resolutions, independent of astronomical dates.
