Regular school board meeting canceled and convention attendance

The school board meeting for Monday night is canceled. Johnny Clark may attend the American Association of School Administrators convention in Las Vegas Nevada, which runs Thursday through Tuesday. Dr Jim Lewis, director of secondary education, is also at the convention. Don Portie will speak at a gardening meeting Monday at The Baytown Sun. Public welcome.

Longtime Baytonian Rites Monday for John H Stewart

Services for John Herbert Stewart well known as a Baytown carpenter were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Earthman Funeral Home Chapel. A Baytown resident since 1942, he died Saturday in a local hospital. He came from Nebraska and was a Knights of Pythias chancellor and Carpenters Local 1334 member. He served in the U S Navy before World War II. Survivors include his wife Clara and several nieces and nephews. The Rev Troy Cartmill officiated. Burial was in Memory Gardners under Earthman Funeral direction.

Federal suit targets Baytown schools over prayer

Ronald Sommers of the ACLU filed suit in Houston on behalf of Ruth Johnson and her children Kevin and Melissa Ross Sterling students alleging infringements on religious rights and parental authority. The complaint cites daily devotional activities including Bible readings the Lord s Prayer and the pledge to the flag at Ross Sterling High School and seeks damages of 45000.
