Mrs. Davis Dies at 64 in Barrett Station
Mrs. Willie Mae Davis, 64, died February 23 in Austin States Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Walker Funeral Home with Rev. P. H. Brown officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Barrett Station. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Davis. The Christian Women’s Fellowship will host its annual Mother-Daughter Banquet at 6 30 p.m. Tuesday with Edythe Musick presenting Foods of the Bible. Dr Henry Dismukes of Baytown will speak at the Rotary Club noon meeting on Wednesday on Bits Bridle and Saddles.

A public meeting will be held Tuesday at Barbers Hill High School to discuss affiliating Beach City Mont Belvieu with the Baytown Community Chest. Baytown Chest officials, Mont Belvieu and Beach City leaders, and Chambers County officials will attend to answer questions. West Chambers County Commissioner H H McCollum urges all area residents to attend and participate. Officials had met recently to discuss affiliation and decided to hold the public meeting.

Weingarten Dies at 83 Baytown Grocer and Peace Leader
Joe Weingarten a Baytown grocer and peace advocate died of heart failure Sunday in Methodist Hospital Houston at age 83. He built a grocery empire and funded world peace efforts, founding the Institute for World Peace in Houston. Survived by wife Malvina, two sons, a brother, a sister, ten grandchildren. Funeral Monday at Congregation Beth Yeshrun Houston. Interment Beth Yeshrun Cemetery Alien Parkway. Weingarten led peace drives and philanthropy across the world.

Home blaze fatal to Baytown man
A house fire in Country Club Estates Baytown early Sunday claimed the life of 47 year old Thomas L. Bishop. His son Ronnie, 18, was hospitalized with burns and smoke exposure but expected to be released. Mrs. Bishop was away. The blaze began about 2 50 a m Sunday at 5004 Ashwood in a 328000 home and gutted the structure. Firefighters found Bishop's body between the den and kitchen. the loss is estimated at 350000. Neighbors and a next door family aided, but flames forced them back. The cause remains under investigation with possible origins in the den area and a heating unit in the attic considered. The wind spread embers to nearby homes, though only minor damage occurred. Bishop had worked 20 years for Humble Oil and Refining Co Baytown Refinery in the M C General Department as a coordination clerk.

1 500 Acre Tract Added To Bayport
Bayport expands with a 1 500 acre waterfront addition announced by Friendswood Development Co a Humble Oil subsidiary. The new area lies southeast of Bayport offers direct access to the Bayport Channel adjacent to the Houston Ship Channel aiding bulk material movement for plants. Bayport now totals over 8 030 acres with ten site owners including Celanese ARCO Chemical Versical American Cryogenics and Lockheed Aircraft. The Bayport Channel is dredged to 12 feet with plans to deepen it and add port berths docks and storage facilities. Preliminary engineering is complete and ultimate port development remains planned.

Sterling Municipal Library has been awarded $9000 under Title I of the Library Services and Construction Act. Head librarian Flora Wilhite says the funds will buy books and microfilm back issues of The Sun, bolstering the library’s acquisitions and aiding the state wide public library development plan. The grant, approved by the city council, follows a previous $5000 Title I grant last year. the library also has a $15000 city allotment for books this year.
