School Census Opens In Gentry District

Superintendent George H. Gentry, serving as census director, starts the 1953 count by sending letters to parents and custodians of each district school. About 7,660 children born between September 2, 1935 and September 1, 1947 will be added to rolls. students will collect signed cards from homes. Children must live in the district on April 1, 1953 to qualify for pro rata state apportionment.

Dillard Jones Dies of Pulmonary Edema

Dillard Vernon Jones, 49, was found dead Tuesday and died of pulmonary edema per Justice of the Peace Hoscoe Zierleim, with a post mortem noting a normal heart. Jones’s personal physician, who spoke with him about an hour before death, reported no signs of trouble then.

Jesse Sharman of La Porte dies at 67

Jesse Sharman Jr., 67, of La Porte died Wednesday morning at his La Porte home after moving there seven months ago from Lufkin. Born in Houston, he was a World War II veteran. Services were to be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at First Methodist Church with Rev. Jesse Thomason. Father Divine Attacks New Jersey Turnpike Withheld Blessing

Mexican film actress held in El Paso

Mexican movie star Rosaura Revuelta was arrested in El Paso on an administrative warrant for illegal entry into the United States. Bandits Free Two Prisoners From Henderson Jail

Two masked gunmen raided the Henderson county jail at 3 a.m. freeing W. C. Massey, a one legged con man, and Reagan Morris, 28, a rape defendant. Jailer Marion Propes was overpowered. the escapees fled toward Mexico with the aid of the armed intruders. Massey has fled multiple jails, and Morris was on parole after a theft sentence. Authorities in San Antonio flagged Massey’s possible route to Mexico as local deputies investigated the incident.
