Edwin Edwards, the nations newest governor, defeats the strongest GOP opposition yet in Louisiana's opener. In Bay Town, Kathy Bertsch rushed her daughter Sandy to Gulf Coast Hospital after a bicycle spoke injury. There she met Kathy Jackson whose daughter Barbara sustained a finger injury from a lawn chair. The two mothers, who work together at The Bay Town Sun, had spent the day together prior to the accidents.

Fire Ant Panel Sets Texas Hearings At Lamar Junior High
The Texas House committee on fire ants holds its first meeting in Rosenberg at 7 p.m. in the Lamar Junior High School cafeteria. Chairman Joe Hubenak says the panel will visit at least five more sites across 54 infested counties to study the problem and eradication methods. The ants have spread from Longview to Corpus Christi.
