Mont Belvieu man arrested in 2012 Baytown homicide
Vernon Earl Brooks, 48, remains in Chambers County Jail after a felony warrant for murder was executed in the 1700 block of FM 565. The Harris County indictment ties him to the Sept. 25, 2012 shooting death of Sergio Saldana, 30, at a Baytown home on Oak Street. Authorities say Brooks, a federal parole violator with prior burglary and drug charges, was captured with a multi-agency operation and the case awaits trial before further details are released.

Black History Month Educating McNair Children
Editor notes the first in a series on The Education of McNair's Children. Many local kids attended Caroline Bazile Kindergarten School, first at St Luke Baptist Church on Isabell Street, later a building at Broad and Gant. Bazile taught skills and strong morals, influenced by religion, with an end of year program at Harlem Elementary. I recall being chosen to portray Little Black Sambo, painted black for the role. See history page 10.
