Baytown residents on March 6 will vote on a proposed development bond to expand park and recreation facilities. The plan aims to catch up with peers, with 6.2 percent of city residents projected for growth and funding earmarked for new age groups.
A village proposal outlines a 20 acre west side park between Garth Road and Ned Street with planned access from Main Street area. It includes a central facility center on West Main with a hall and building, plus improvements to park facilities in the vicinity. AP report from Saigon details a rebel coup attempt against Lt. Gen. Nguyen Khanh. Warlines surrounded the rebel radio station as tanks stood by and civilians were urged to clear the area. Rebel leader Pham Ngoc Thao claimed the move aimed to end Khanh’s dictatorship and dethrone Ky. Reports on Khanh’s location varied, with deployments and countermeasures anticipated.
Harris County Commissioner W V Ramsey spoke at the Wooster Chamber of Commerce annual installation banquet at the Tower Restaurant. He outlined Baker Road extension plans tying to the new Baytown high school andBayway Drive improvements, noted near-term right of way acquisitions, and discussed U S Army engineers study of Brownwood Levee and Jevee projects. Ramsey urged speeding Decker Drive, stressed county service costs, and warned of 18 000 pending district court cases.

Charles Gates announces two more filings for Baytown City Council races, bringing total candidates to six. District 3 adds James E. Walker of 505 Circle Drive, an employee at Monsanto Baytown, and Don M. Hullum, a former multi-sport athlete from Robert E. Lee High School and Texas A&M University, who had Thursday entry in the race.
Baytown resident Hullum, a 1959 ABL graduate and former four year baseball scholar, seeks District 3 on the city council. He and wife Devolyn Fuller have ten daughters and are active members of South Main Church of Christ. Opponents include incumbent Kenneth Badgett and Verone Devereaux Sr.
Perry W. Britton and J. Bryan Stratton head the Community Chest slate for chairmanship and secretary positions to be decided at the annual public meeting Tuesday at 7 30 p m in the Chamber of Commerce building. Five directors for the board and five Welfare League directors are also up for election with nominees named for medical and lay directorships and reports planned by Charles Tilfery and J Bryan Stratton.
Humble Oil and Refining plans a cyclohexane plant at Baytown Refinery with initial annual capacity of 20 million gallons. Construction starts immediately and target completion is next fall. Plant uses benzene feed and expands Enjay Chemical Co. offerings for nylon intermediates and man made fibers.
Aviation and law enforcement tracked a low flying light plane Friday morning around Humphrey Airport Baytown and nearby areas. A Beaumont radio operator claimed contact with a distressed craft while local reports described a plane seen loitering near streets before vanishing with no confirmed sighting.
The Port of Houston will host a recognition event honoring the Briana Band and Lee Brigadiers as auditors present plaques for appreciation. Local core missioner Briana Pruett will present awards to the Robert Ey Lee Band and associated brigadiers at the ceremony.
