Roy Hutchins remembered as Carver mentor and trailblazer
Former Carver High School coach and science teacher Roy Almer Hutchins inspired students in athletics and academics. Named head track and field coach at Robert E. Lee High School in May 1971 as the district's first Black major-sport head coach, he died December following at age 52. Hutchins won four PVIL state titles in track, helped Carver claim six district titles and three state football championships, and earned Hall of Honor status from PVIL in 1994. Former student J Warren Singleton recalls his impact and hopes for Hall of Fame recognition.
