Optimists Honor Law Officers Tonight in Baytown

Baytown Optimist Club to present three law enforcement awards at a 7 p.m. Tower Hotel gathering. Outstanding senior police officer, outstanding rookie, and outstanding citizen in law enforcement will be honored by Keith King Darrell Russell and Lester Alford. About 76 Optimists and guests expected for Ladies Night dinner with speaker Harry Caldwell Houston police inspector and UH behavioral science instructor. Caldwell, a UH alumnus with a master’s in sociology, has held multiple HPD roles since 1953 and serves on several boards including Mental Health Association and United Fund.

Frosty Weather Forecast for Baytown Area

A mid morning U S Weather Bureau forecast predicts frosty cold temperatures in the city with Monday night in the mid 30s and a slight warm-up on Tuesday. Northerly winds of 16 to 18 mph were expected Monday, with scattered frost in Baytown and light rainfall totals of .20 inches locally and .25 inches at Houston Intercontinental Airport.

Mayo Group Holds Church In Houston

A small group from the Mexican American Youth Organization entered a vacant Houston church. They plan to convert it into a community center offering a free breakfast program for neighborhood children, bilingual preschool education, and community meeting spaces. Organizer Yolanda Garza Birdwell said a window was broken and leaders of the Brazos Presbytery rejected talks for months. The building has been vacant since last year.

Crosby Texas trustees meet tonight to decide whether to appeal the January federal desegregation order requiring complete student desegregation by September and the start of faculty and athletic desegregation. City of Baytown imposes 10 percent late fee starting April

The city will begin a 10 percent penalty on late payments for water, sewer, and garbage bills effective with April billing. Due dates, itemized charges, and a pre calculated four cycle mailing schedule accompany the new system. After two months in arrears, a notice with a cut off date will be sent.

Baytown community concert features Baytown school teachers and directors among the musicians. Heavy raid rocks Southeast Asia with massive air strikes

More than 400 American fighter bombers attacked North Vietnamese troops and supply lines in eastern Laos in one of the heaviest air offensives. An ALE Skyraider was shot down and the pilot presumed killed. The raids targeted the Plain of Jars and the Ho Chi Minh trail, with planes from U S carriers in the Tonkin Gulf and bases in Thailand and South Vietnam. In South Vietnam, allied forces killed many enemy soldiers near Da Nang, with dozens of South Vietnamese killed or wounded.
