City to expand smart traffic signals across Houston area

Garth described a new adaptive signal system that senses incoming traffic and prioritizes through traffic while delaying cross-street movement. The system, already in use on another road, will be online by late March on Highway 146. Total cost about 1 million dollars from a state grant with a 20 percent city match. If effective, expansion to additional intersections will be cheaper per site since the central server is already in place. Pastrana expects gradual expansion to control all city signals.
