DESMOND BARRY GOP candidate for congressman at large in the November general election will speak at a meeting of Eighth Congressional District campaign workers at pm Wednesday at Hamilton Junior High School in Houston. His topic will be The Closed Frontier.
Harris County Commissioners Court voted to reappoint the National Bank of Commerce of Houston as the county depository and rejected Bank of the Southwest bid to become central deposit. County Commissioner Yo Y Ramsey of Precinct 2 stated the court would decide how much of the county funds stay with Burris County banks.
Dreary weather expected in the Panhandle not as severe in the Bay town area for the next two days. Cloudy with occasional rain forecast through Tuesday. Monday temperatures expected from 47 to 67 degrees. Galveston tides list high at 6 pm and 7 pm Tuesday and low at 12 19 am and 12 29 pm.

Twenty-four Humble Oil and Refining Co. workers from the Baytown Baytown Ezy town refinery will appeal to a Texas Employment Commission appeals referee at city hall. They contend early retirements were not voluntary. The commission has found most applicants ineligible, citing policy that voluntary retirement disqualifies benefits. Hearings set for Thursday proceed case by case to determine eligibility and possible lifting of restrictions.
A Public Health Service report shows pneumonia influenza deaths above epidemic thresholds in 108 cities, with many outbreaks along the Eastern Seaboard and inland to Kansas. Maryland, Illinois, North Carolina, and D C confirm cases. Vermont and other states are suspected. Vaccines from 1957-58 era are noted, with a mid March decline expected after a winter surge.
Governor Connally seeks Senate action on a higher education study committee funded by both houses. The measure faces a Senate vote with 23 sponsors and requires a two-fifths rule suspend. Baytown and East Harris County Community Chest plans an annual public meeting at 7 30 p m Monday in the Chamber of Commerce to elect a chairman secretary and five directors from a long slate. Nominees for chairman include Roy Elms Conrad Matysiak Dr A K Morris and Troy Peterson with secretary candidates Neidie Brown Jane Davis Malcolm Schultz and Pat Martin. Five directors will be chosen from a list featuring Spencer Blain Sam Bramlett Leonard Hart Felix Hatchell H V Herbert W C Jackson Frank James E H Levering J L Lutes Jack McKay Dr Max Mosesman L J Reilly and others. Medical representatives Dr Malcolm Jones and Dr H W Kilpatrick are nominated along with two lay representatives. The outgoing council secretary will preside and all past contributors are invited to attend and vote.

NEW YORK AP The Sulphur Queen disappeared on February 2 as a severe Atlantic storm lashed the southeast coast. An ongoing search covered 250 miles offshore from Cape Hatteras to Fort Pierce with multiple Coast Guard assets and 15 planes. Officials weighed hijacking, drift into Cuban waters, or disablement, with Cuba and Swiss Embassy inquiries noted. No definite sighting or crew location had been reported 18 hours after a prior yellow substance sighting and a later radio position from the ship’s crew indicated possible Cuba involvement.
Funeral services for Rinna Lee aran, Sr. of Mont Belvieu were held at 3 p.m. Monday at Earthman Chapel in Baytown. He died at 2 p.m. Saturday in a Houston hospital. He was retired from Sun Oil Co. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery under Earthman Funeral Home direction. Survivors include four daughters, two sons, three sisters, a brother, 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
The forecast from the US Weather Bureau in Houston warns of cloudy skies and much colder temperatures through Tuesday. Rain changing to freezing rain sleet or snow Monday, ending early Tuesday, with low of 23 and high around 35. A bitter norther spreads heavy snow across Texas, closing many schools and making travel hazardous.
