A notorious killer known as Mad Dog was captured in a San Francisco pawnshop while attempting to pawn stolen rings from Los Angeles. A pawnbroker alerted police after the thief, Irving Trvin, blurted out his identity during questioning, prompting a nationwide manhunt. He had escaped from Princeton jail two days earlier.
CIO AFL President George Meany and Vicent Weiler Reuther led a late 1950s style rally to mobilize hotel and restaurant workers in the Minuit area with speeches to over 10,000 cheering laborers. Capt Bill Dierlam, longtime Hinde Oil foreman and yacht captain, died Thursday in a Houston hospital less than five hours after his 17 year old mother Annie Dierlam Gordy passed away in another hospital. A native of Rockport he lived in La Porte 13 years and leaves widow Felesia Dierlam and two daughters plus four grandchildren. Funeral services for Capt Dierlam and his mother will be Saturday at Sedle gast Kopft. Reverend Milton Bailey and Reverend MoT Lewis to officiate.
Liberal Democrats will meet in Houston November 18 to map terms to help Gov. Allan Shivers’ control of the Texas delegation to the national convention. Between 1,000 persons are expected at the meeting of the Democratic Advisory Council of Texas. The gathering will be at the meeting hall of the Royalist Shivers administration forces are said to be organizing precinct by precinct to gain control of the May 22 Democratic convention in Dallas.
Baytown residents await a long awaited reunion as Fulton and his eight month old son Dana meet for the first time since December. Mrs Fulton has shared with the Army while the father served overseas, and the baby has lived with his grandparents in Texas.
A university spokesman said a plan was set for a new hearing on February 22 regarding a controversial case involving Autherine and race relations at the Alabama campus. The president and trustees commented on the situation amid requests for a decision.
The son of the late Knute Rockne, famed University of Notre Dame coach, was reported in critical condition Friday after a collision that also injured a passenger, Folin Rockne. Police and hospital officials provided few details.
The City Council approved redefining Voting District 4 to ensure Cedar Bayou area representation and bar nonresidents from Position 4. City council approves payment to Baytown attorney Gerald Fortney for 12 month services tied to Cedar Bayou Water District annexation. Fortney had received $300 of $1109 due and claims $600 remains. council pays $500, amid charges of favoritism by Councilman Clayton.
An 11-year-old boy died of burns after being trapped in a flaming home in Channelview. He died Thursday in a Galveston hospital after extending treatment. His brother Clifford Lee Westbrook survived the blaze and was released from hospital earlier.
A telephone mixup disrupted communications as multiple callers reached the wrong number. The error led to confusion and frustration as one resident, identified as Bickel, demanded the correct contact and expressed concern over the mistaken dialing.
