King’s Chapel blends history and faith in downtown Boston
King’s Chapel in Boston has survived wars and sectarian disputes to remain a thriving site on the Freedom Trail. The Georgian church houses an active 400-member congregation and a unique mix of Unitarian theology and Anglican liturgy. Its adjacent burying ground holds gravestones of figures like John Winthrop and Mary Chilton. The chapel’s origin traces to 1686 when King James II seized land to establish an official Church of England presence in the Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony, with Harvard-educated James Freeman invited to lead services.
