Edna and Jim Boyer describe Bayshore Rod, Reel and Gun Club's oyster whingling day with over 3,000 served. Notables at the event include Nolan and Margaret Schulze and Rev. Harold Bomhoff, with many area officials from Houston and Baytown in attendance. Funeral services for Mrs. Eutha Carpenter Angel 40 of 3503 Woodcrest are set for 1 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church with Rev. Cheek and Dr Thiele officiating. She died Friday in a Baytown hospital after 31 years in Baytown. Graveside rites follow at 4 40 p.m. at Camp Ruby Cemetery in Livingston with Paul A. Lee Funeral Home directing.
Frank Erwin Jr. faces a Senate Nominations Committee hearing as UT regents chair amid liberal anger. Dan Williams of Dallas and Jenkins Garrett of Fort Worth join his first-term slate, with at least seven of 13 committee members likely to support him for confirmation. The full Senate will vote in a closed session if approved.

A Texas Legislature pay raise bill for minimum teacher salaries has Baytown ties. Rep. Lindon Williams co-authored the measure from District 23, while Rep. George Hinson chairs Public Education and is linked to Baytown official W D Hinson. The bill, signed by 91 of 150 House members, would raise starting pay for bachelor and master degree teachers over several years, with cost of living increases proposed for 1974 and 1978. In Baytown, current nine month base pay already exceeds the proposed starting levels, highlighting funding nuances and district autonomy.
