Senate panel backs parimutuel betting in Texas

AUSTIN AP Senate Committee on Counties Cities and Towns approved local option parimutuel betting with state control and taxation after a four hour emotional hearing. Sponsor Sen Jim Bates faces a difficult path to floor debate needing 23 votes to suspend constitutional rules. More than 1000 attended as supporters argued economic benefits while opponents raised moral concerns and grayhound betting was noted as missing.

Rebuilding Plan Set For Highlands Church

First Baptist Church of Highlands plans a 75000 pound rebuilding program after a Sunday morning fire destroyed its main auditorium. Pastor Rev. Bonner C. Free Shows By Rubinoff Slated For Baytown Visit

Violinist Dave Rubinoff is to be welcomed in Baytown by a Kiwanis committee at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn. He will arrive a day early for school concerts sponsored by the Baytown Kiwanis Club, with a public show at Rupert E. Lee High School auditorium at 8:15 p.m. Friday. Tickets cost 2 dollars, funding a Kiwanis community service project. Rubinoff will also perform at Highlands Junior High Thursday at 9 a.m., Travis Elementary at 9:45, Burnet at 10:20, St Joseph's at 2 p.m., and Friday at Carver 9 a.m., Horace Mann 10:45, Robert E. Lee 12:45, and Ross Sterling 1:45, with more schools possible if time permits.

Baytonians Serve on Harris County Grand Jury Panels

Baytown is represented on Harris County grand juries with four locals named on the panel chosen by Criminal District Judge Wen dell A. Odom in Houston. The group includes R. D. Ballew a Hou ston insurance executive former Councilman Jack Huron Dist Murphy of 1901 Gillette and Mrs B B Ashby a housewife of 4904 St Andrews. The Tuesday Thursday panel contrasts with another jury impaneled Monday by District Judge Miron A. Love that will meet Mondays and Wednesdays.

Airhart Drive widening bid tops five offers

An apparent low bid of 39 983 40 by Brown and Root for widening and resurfacing Airhart Drive from Market Street to Decker Drive was submitted to Baytown officials. Five bids were received. the council will decide at the regular meeting. Other bids ranged from 45 699 to 48 920 with completion times 30 to 45 days.

Mrs Stack Dies at 80. 1962 Mother of the Year

Julia Stack, 86, mother of Mrs Eleanore Zorn of Baytown, dies in East Patterson New Jersey. Funeral in Passaic Greek Orthodox Church with body at Labash Funeral Home. Named Mother of the Year in 1962 by the Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars for raising seven sons in World War II plus families. Mont Belvieu Votes On City Marshall Retention

Mont Belvieu residents will vote Saturday to decide if the office of city marshal should be retained. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the sub courthouse with election judge Don W. McLeod overseeing. Only incorporated area residents may vote. prior voter registration certificates or poll tax receipts are required. Arthur Barrow was elected city marshal in 1966 when Mont Belvieu was incorporated.

Seaman's Center Open House Sets First Birthday

The Baytown Seaman's Center at 1304 Harbor hosts an open house at 7 30 p m on its first birthday. Rev J Wristers of the Dutch Reform mission will speak on starting similar centers in other U S coastal cities. Fire at Montgomery restaurant kills at least 26

A dramatic blaze swept the rooftop dining room of Dale's Penthouse in downtown Montgomery during a wintry Tuesday night. Firefighters faced icy streets as flames rose, with authorities later confirming the bodies of former Public Service Commissioner Ed Peppers and his wife Ann among the dead. Also missing was Mrs. Jack Doane, wife of the Montgomery Advertiser sports editor, who was dining with reporters when the fire started around 11. Governor Wallace expressed sympathy as investigators pursued the high casualty count and linked the disaster to an earlier federal extortion indictment against Pepper.
