Kennedy pushes handgun controls to curb cheap Saturday Night Specials
The plan targets mail order and imports of pistols not qualifying as sporting arms. Officials say safety standards from the Bureau of Standards, enforced by the ATF, would curb unsafe weapons and raise prices for likely abusers. An AP survey links rising gun violence to pistols, noting 2 million specials last year and 40 murders in Little Rock, 28 by handguns, half of them specials. Police Chief Weeks and DA Buseh call these guns designed only for killing.
