Jenkins Asked to Explain Excuse for Testimony
Washington AP The former Johnson aide Walter Jenkins did not appear before the Site Rules Committee for a subpoena in the Bobby Baker probe. Jenkins sent lawyer Waller Ford and an attorney health examiner, Dr Leon Yachoison, to request excusal from testifying, relayed by Sen Joseph Clark. Jenkins has been under psychiatric care since resigning his White House post. The probe concerns alleged pressure on Don Reynolds to buy advertising time on a Johnson family controlled Austin TV station. Reynolds says he bought it at Jenkins request in 1957 after selling Johnson a $10,000 life policy. Baker, who resigned Oct 7 1969 as secretary to the Senate Democratic leadership, was linked to Reynolds Insurance. Jenkins sworn statement to committee reportedly denied knowledge of any advertising time arrangements. Reynolds' agency related, Roker jailed but declined to answer on grounds of possible self incrimination.
