Matagorda Lighthouse Keepsits Bright Through Years
The Matagorda Lighthouse on Matagorda Island near Port O Connor remains an unmanned beacon since 1955. Keeper Arthur Barr and assistants maintain the 8 foot high light feeding it from electricity and standby generators. The beacon, once kerosene powered, now uses a 1000 watt bulb with a 15 mile visibility aiding ships in Matagorda Bay and the Matagorda Ship Channel.
