Baytown area residents can choose from New Year's Eve activities including a singles celebration at Northside Baptist Church 300 Cedar Bayou Baytown hosted by Bran Weldon of the San Jacinto Baptist Association. The event runs 8 p.m. to close with snacks, karaoke, games, and music. Doug Moreland performs at the Elbow Room 1201 N. Alexander Drive with a midnight champagne toast and raffles. Advanced tickets 15 dollars, 20 dollars at the door.
Baytown sees weak New Year fireworks demand amid forecasts of rain and officials issuing strict warnings. Fire Marshal Bernard Olive warns violators face a 2000 dollar fine. Fireworks remain illegal in Mont Belvieu and Anahuac, with airborne firecrackers banned in Old River.
Fireworks safety guidelines urge buying only from licensed outlets and using fireworks outdoors with adult supervision. Do not use homemade devices, keep water and towels handy, light one at a time, and avoid metal or glass containers. Exemption options exist for large land tracts. county rules limit within city limits and near schools, hospitals, stands, and gas stations. After three years leading the Baytown branch, Executive Director Jim Haugen will depart Friday to take a Conroe YMCA director role starting Monday. Carrie Gaskamp will serve as temporary director as Haugen pledges community growth and seamless leadership amid a 47 year history.
Prospective Texas elected officials must file by Friday end of business to secure spots in March 9 Democratic and Republican primaries. Read list of Harris and Chambers County candidates including incumbents and party chairs as filing opened December 3, with a deadline noted and page pointer for more names.
Baytown will collect this year’s Christmas trees on a January pickup day. Residents should place trees curbside by a.m. for a single community-wide pass. Trees will be recycled for city park landscaping. remove tinsel garland before disposal. Call 281-420-5360 for details.
