Steel Production Takes Slight Drop
INLAND STEEL Chairman Joseph L. Block notes 1962 steel ingot output near 1961 and 1960 levels of about 98 to 99 million tons, while shipments rise five percent due to mill inventories and higher user demand. He warns profits will be unfavorably squeezed by rising production costs and slightly lower prices since 1958, despite strong automotive and can manufacturing demand boosting volumes. Prospects for early 1963 hinge on overall economic activity and whether users rebuild inventories amid potential strikes, with possible modest declines in capital goods spending and a likely production rise from inventory accumulation.
