UTMB repairs on track to boost Galveston economy
Hurricane repairs and new construction at the University of Texas Medical Branch could reach 1 billion in projects, offering relief to island businesses. After a public bid, contracts totaling 667 million were awarded to Tellepsen Brothers Vaughn Construction and Linbeck Group for infrastructure health care and academic buildings. The campus flooded in September 2008 and FEMA lists UTMB as its largest single claimant. Several initiatives include 30 million for the medical library 90 million for a research building and 450 million for a surgical tower awaiting UT System approval.
