Harris County tax assessor collector deputies will visit Highlands January 19 and 20 to accept tax payments register voters and accept property renditions. They will be at the Water Control and Improvement District office 125 San Jacinto from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch 12 to 1 p.m.
Cloudy and cool with a chance of intermittent showers through Tuesday. Temperature ranges from the upper 40s to mid 50s. Tides on Tuesday: high at 7:43 a.m. and 5:49 p.m. Low tides by 8:31 a.m. and 7:25 p.m.
Tony Campus and Ditto Dennis Williams welcome the new year while UT student Dennis Williams, patrolman Mike Jordan, and families from Ft Worth meet friends in Baytown. City Manager Delly Voelkel takes a short vacation as Dan DeGarmo and family anticipate study in the Netherlands. Mrs Harvey Polling comments on a photo of trousers seen as yard-wide waist. Her brother-in-law Jim Luther of Anatone, Wash, once 58 inch waist eight years ago, has since gained much.
Patricia Kay Segrest, 13, dies from internal and head injuries after being struck in the 100 block of Cabaniss. Siblings Jeanne Segrest, 4, and Ronald Glenn Kimmey, 14, injured. Driver Scott Beetler, 17, says he was blinded by headlights. no charges filed. Body sent to Longview for services with burial planned for Wednesday.
An AP report notes dental scientists expect near elimination of tooth decay within a decade based on evidence that decay is an infectious germ disease. Public Health Service favors direct treatment including enzyme blockers to halt bacteria. Navy and private researchers seek vaccines or prevention methods.
Navy aims to prevent tooth decay for submariners and spaceflight, where access to dentists is limited. With about 800 million decayed teeth in the U S and children averaging three decayed teeth by school age and 11 by age 15, eliminating caries could free dentists’ time and save about $1 billion annually in patient costs. Dr Seymour J Kreshover notes a concerted effort could nearly eliminate dental decay.

Funeral services were held for Norman Gene Durdin 40 of Mont Belvieu secretary of the Barbers Hill School Board. Durdin died from head injuries after a deer hunting accident near Centerville. He was an operator for Shell Oil Co and a member of local unions and committees. He was re elected to the school board this spring. Survivors include his wife a daughter and a son. Burial in Humble. Pallbearers named.
