Last link to original Texas ranches buried behind gate

Floresville site Rancho de las Cabras, an 18th century ranch complex that helped found modern cattle operations, sits behind gates for over two decades. Preservationists cite lack of funding from Congress and the National Park Service as the reason it remains unexcavated and closed to the public. Archaeologist Susan Snow calls it a once in a lifetime site. The 100 acre site, donated to the state 32 years ago and then to the National Park Service 15 years ago as an addition to the San Antonio Missions, awaits funding to allow excavation and public access.

Missions along San Antonio River ranches preserved by sand cover

Archaeologists from the National Park Service and University of Texas San Antonio uncovered several feet of sand covering the Rancho de las Cabras ruins near the Alamo area. The walls stood despite mortar loss but remain buried to protect them. Preservation would cost 3 to 4 million dollars with annual operation costs of 300 to 400 thousand. Funding remains scarce as Congress remains unavailable to lobby, leaving the site in need of congressional appropriation.
