Volunteers host the 24th annual Chili and BBQ Cookoff at San Jacinto Mall in the west parking lot. Admission is 5 dollars with free entry for children 12 and under. Event runs from 4 p.m. to midnight on January 9 and from 10 a.m. to midnight on January 10.
Troops in Tikrit Iraq marked their first Christmas in the country with meals and carols at a base mess hall. Officers dressed as Santa delivered candy while about 50 to 60 troops attended a Mass in a rest facility. Nearby fighting persisted as Iraqi guerrillas fired mortars and U S vehicles returned fire.
Go-Texan volunteers plan the 24th Annual Chili When It's Chilly and BBQ Cookoff at San Jacinto Mall January 9 and 10 with gates 4 p.m. to midnight Friday and 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday. Tickets are five dollars at the gate. under-12 admitted free. Teams from the Houston area will compete in chicken, beans, ribs, chili, brisket, and showmanship with judging Saturday morning through afternoon. A cook's meeting is set for Friday at 7 p.m. Approximately 60 teams have entered, with more expected. Funds benefit the Baytown Highlands Go-Texas Committee scholarship drive. proceeds support four ten-thousand-dollar scholarships.
Beach City Volunteer Fire Department seeks a new Emergency Services District with taxing authority to cover industrial areas under Baytown's extraterritorial rule. Fire Chief Jim Josey pitched the plan to the City Council, which tabled the request for more details. A voter consent election would be required, potentially aligning with the presidential vote.
Baytown will collect Christmas trees January 5 with curbside by 8 am. Crews will pass once to remove trees and recycle them for park landscaping. Please remove tinsel garland and decorations beforehand. Public Works details via 281-420-5300.
Three babies were born at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital on Christmas Day with one more expected. Dalton James Crawford arrived at 12 08 a m as the first Christmas Day birth with mother Carly Flowers and Ronald Crawford Jr of Deer Park among the pleased parents.
