Mathews pins possible Christmas star origins to planetary alignments
Astronomer Mathews reviews evidence for the Christmas star with options from planetary alignments to novas and supernovas. He flags three likely planetary scenarios dating from 6 B.C. to 2 B.C., with the 4 17 6 B.C. Aries alignment favored, noting ancient observers might have seen a sign of a powerful leader and the potential link to the Magi. He plans further study at Notre Dame and publication in Royal Astronomical Society venues.
