An ad hoc committee will begin fact finding after the Christmas holidays to review City Manager Garry Brumback’s contract and evaluation. Brumback seeks a more secure contract based on merit rather than rumor, while councilors hope for improved communication between the council and the manager’s office.
Local charities face growing demand as holiday needs rise while donations fall. Kathryn Higginbotham, executive director of Bay Area Homeless Services, cites a tougher economy, rising unemployment, and foreclosures as driving more families to seek help. The shelter turns away 50 to 65 families monthly due to limited resources. United Way and small grants help, but surplus items are needed for outreach.
Firefighters from Channelview and Mont Belvieu joined Baytown crews to tackle a Saturday morning blaze at Building D of Walnut Ridge Condominiums on 1505 Ward Road. Officials attributed the likely cause to an electrical problem in a void space between floors. All eight condo units sustained fire, smoke or water damage. Battalion Chief Tim Rogers led the scene noting the fire began in the vertical utility void that services plumbing and electrical lines. The residents smelled smoke before seeing flames as crews worked to contain the spread.
More than 2,000 children packed the Baytown Community Center to meet Santa and receive a toy, with 250 kids taking home refurbished bicycles. Maria Gonzalez and Victor Reyes translated announcements for the Spanish speakers. The third annual Clusin Texas Toy Run drew about 150 motorcycles and three classic cars, praised by Rocky Strange for volunteers and sponsors.
