A leading toy maker and the greatest show on earth announce a merger. Mattel Inc. will swap 1,250,000 Mattel shares for 3,460,000 Ringling Bros. common shares, with Roy Hofheinz and Irvin Feld guiding the combined entity. Hofheinz would receive about 27 million in value and stay as board chairman.
AP reports the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision allows 18 year olds to vote in national elections, with states setting local voting ages. The ruling also abolishes residency requirements above 30 days for presidential votes and suspends state literacy tests for five years. Baytown City Council schedules a public hearing at 7 p.m. January 7 on annexing a 10 foot public right of way extending north from the U S Steel plant entrance to Interstate 10 along portions of FM 565 and Highway 146. The move would let trucks keep current freight rates from Houston and Baytown. Council also appoints George McCuen to the Pest Control Commission and authorizes Terry Doplan to seek HUD funds for Bell Park property.
Baytown police officer Booth, an eight year veteran, was indicted by a Harris County grand jury and arrested on duty. He faces possession of marijuana charges after a small quantity was found in his van. Four others linked to the case held on $1,000 bonds. investigation ongoing. Richard Lee Swain 18 of Barrett Station was arrested after a high speed chase through Country Club Oaks. Police officers pursued at up to 90 mph, the suspect rammed a sergeant, who fired at a tire. Swain fled to Somerset Drive and was found on a porch. burglary charges filed.
