Baytown Mayor Pete Alfaro, 63, will not seek re election in May ending a long tenure that began with a 1989 council appointment and a 1993 mayoral appointment. He cites family time and new opportunities as his reason for stepping down after five consecutive mayoral wins, the longest current Baytown stretch since 1948.
Wilam Chamblin, accused of the capital murders of his wife and daughter, may see a trial date set next month as Judge Mike Anderson postponed Friday’s hearing to January 23. Assistant District Attorney Renee Magee says a death penalty decision hinges on the upcoming psychiatric evaluation and Chamblin’s mental state. Chamblin, 50, has been held without bond since the June 13 slayings.
Baytown officials say a 94 acre Market Street zoning change is off the table after a neighborhood meeting. The land would have moved from Urban Neighborhood to Mixed Use, potentially allowing bars and other uses, but city staff will not pursue the original proposal.
Baytown Sgt. Freddie Lensing, a 1999 Robert E Lee High School graduate, takes a rare home leave from nine months of duty in Iraq and will soon return to active duty after catching up on holidays and anniversaries with his family.
Lensing, stationed in Iraq, has spent 15 days at home with his wife Kandi since December 5. He says the time at home was exciting and highlights the value of simple comforts. He will return to Iraq for up to three months, noting long lines for services there. See SOLDIER on Page 3A.
