Viet Offensive Expected After New Year in Saigon
U S intelligence says the Communist command has started the first phase of a winter spring campaign and is moving troops toward Saigon for an assault after New Year’s. The Viet Cong marked their eighth anniversary with grenade and gun attacks in Saigon, killing seven civilians and wounding 11. Authorities warn an attack would threaten peace talks. Major movements near the Cambodian border involve four North Vietnamese divisions drawing closer to the capital as allies deploy about 80 000 troops in 120 battalions. Air power and artillery raids continue around Saigon with limited ground fighting nationwide.
