A Houston based report tallies 39 killed in Texas over the weekend, including 22 in traffic and 17 in fires. Among the dead are Doris Haggard a Monri eta schoolgirl. A heavy two-vehicle crash near LaGrange 43 miles east of the city killed four, including two Texas A&M cadets.
German nationalists voiced plans to restore the Saar region to Germany after sweeping victory in Sunday's election for the 50-seat Landtag. The Saar, a German-speaking area controlled by France since the war, voted after a October referendum rejecting the European statute. Officials hailed the result as progress toward a German government in the Saar, though negotiations with France remain unsettled and a three-fourths majority would be required to amend the 1947 constitution.
Four Mont Belvieu men were hospitalized after a foggy crash on Spencer highway near La Perte early Monday. L F Whitney, 45, required facial surgery at San Jacinto Memorial. Wendell Irish, 21, James Eaton, 24, and F B Williams, 26, were treated and released. Deputy M M Brown investigated. vehicle traveled south on 25th street, veered into a ditch at about 4 45 a m, with all four men transported by Art Simpson ambulance.
Packing begins Tuesday for gifts to 850 youngsters as the Goodfellows fund near $7,100 with 4400 on hand. Deliveries start Friday by Carpenters Union and run through Saturday, with Christmas to follow for all recipients. Contributions from local groups include $18.01 from Lamar fourth graders and various gifts, with donations accepted at The Baytown Sun.
W. T. Busch, president of the First National Bank, served as a pitch hitter for Santa Claus Monday. He announced that all employees of the bank had been given a Christmas bonus. All workers with more than a year at the bank got a month's pay. All workers with more than six months but under a year got a two-week paycheck. All under six months got a week's extra pay.
Gainesville, Texas. The body of 22 year old Billie Allen Brown was found murdered in her bedroom with a meat cleaver. Her husband W. T. Pete Brown, a Santa Fe railroad roundhouse employee, was arrested in Dallas at 1:15 pm est on a public request from Gainesville authorities. Authorities described five clear cleaver wounds to the head and noted the weapon lay on her chest. Brown had left the house after lunch Sunday and did not return to work at the sanitarium Sunday afternoon.
President Eisenhower delivered a Christmas message at Gettysburg Pa pressing a gold telegraph key to light a large tree in the White House pageant of peace. He prayed for better world understanding and lasting peace and urged hopeful faith that peace will come.
Howard Pierson, once a ward of Texas power, is brought to Rusk State Hospital for close confinement after fleeing Austin State Hospital three years ago. He was captured in Syracuse, New York, and escorted by Texas officers to the Rusk area arriving in Jacksonvile at 7 19 am. The transfer included Deputy Sheriff Lloye Chamberlain and Ranger J L Rogers with patrolman O C Guthrie guiding the convoy.
Five year old twins Nyt and Dyli Martin of 507 Forrest receive a letter from Santa at his Estes Park summer headquarters in Colorado. Santa writes of a busy Christmas, routes planned, toys ready, Rudolph and the reindeer, and a promise to visit again next year.

Four Houstonians and an eight year old disappeared Sunday night after seeking shelter on a dredge boat in dense fog nine miles off shore. Baytown Emergency Corps led by A. Morton and Chrisley located the group Monday morning. all were in good spirits and reported no serious exposure after their night aboard the Parker Bros. dredge.
Warm air over the Bay town met a cold front causing heavy fog and visibility near 50 feet Sunday night into Monday morning. Police reported no city accidents, though a La Porte crash occurred Monday from poor visibility. Temperatures ranged from a 52 degree low to a 62 high, rising to 70 before noon and cooling to 40 by Monday night as cold air moved in from Texas. The Weather Bureau forecast the front weakening and a gradual warming trend spreading across the state Tuesday into the eastern regions.
