In Upper Darby Pennsylvania a boy about 10 years old held a grocer, using an air rifle to threaten her. He demanded candy and money, taking a candy cane and 16 cents from the shopper while ignoring her groceries. The incident was reported to police as a stickup by a young bandit.
An advertisement by Olin 360er promises drugs that cure smoking with bold claims. The copy hints at a dramatic cure and cites Weld Enterprises, Inc as rights holder, dated 1930.
Two new patrolmen join Baytown police force announced by Police Chief H. E. B. McKee. James Carrol Bickerstaff 36 from S316 Minnesota begins reporting for work. Arthur Lavan Bryan 32 of 1932 Kilgore Read will be on duty Friday. Bickerstaff led the Waffle Shop in recent years. Bryan works at Lack’s Auto Store. Both are married with two children. Bickerstaff is a Rusk High School alumnus. Bryan attended Hubbard High School and the American School of Photography. This marks Bryan’s first law enforcement job. TRICYCLE SPEED DETERRENTS NEW HAVEN Conn small fry speedsters warned that city parks police can curb tricycles exceeding ten miles per hour.
Autopsy shows Miss Barbara Jean Tomlinson 19 did not die from strangulation. Reymond J. Brossart 29 admitted killing his wife and confessed, claiming he blacked out after attempting to kiss her and strangling him to do so. He described bringing her from Houston to Triangle Courts room and later confessed.
President Truman announced Eisenhower would be supreme Allied commander in Europe. He said additional American units would join the European Army as soon as they are ready, with Eisenhower to travel to Washington for a conference before reporting to Europe. The move ties to NATO era plans discussed with allied leaders.
Ten new directors were elected to the Saytown Chamber of Commerce board by mail vote. The 11 named candidates include Wesley Woods Sam Paine George Gentry Feby Godber B W Harper Jack Jacobs Harry Massey Roy Elms J E Rutter and N B Ballard. The new board will be installed at the January meeting and officers reorganized.
A US Air Force C 51 transport with 30 passengers and seven crew disappeared on a flight from Okinawa to Clark Field Philippines. Far East Air Force officials feared a crash after hearing from near Manila about an hour earlier. Thirty planes were to join the search the following day.
The Goodfellows report over 600 children on their Christmas help list with the $1000 goal far from reached. Donations are needed to cover rising costs for toys candy fruit and nuts as the delivery days approach Thursday and Friday. Tokyo dispatch reports Third Division troops withdrawing along the Hungnam frontage as North Korea vows another assault with Chinese help. MacArthur says reconstituted NK Army numbers 154,000 with 50,000 in reserve near Manchuria, while broadcasts claim China will join to drive American troops from Korea and unify the peninsula.
Late bulletin from St Louis reports General Dwight D. Eisenhower newly appointed supreme commander of Allied European forces will appoint Lieutenant General Alfred Gruenther as chief of staff. In Detroit UPI says federal agents cracked a multi million dollar drug ring selling heroin in wholesale lots across Midwest and Southwest states reaching Texas.
In Korea a US force repelled a superior air attack as Russian made jets bore down. At the same time Suber fortresses dropped 192 tons of high explosive on Communist supply targets in the northwest, described as yielding excellent results.
President Truman denounces false Republican charges against Secretary of State Dean Acheson and refuses to dismiss him. He calls for bipartisan unity, defends foreign policy, and says American troops will join unified NATO forces in Europe when ready.
James Frances Uncle Jim Sut terfield died at 30 am Monday at his Highlands home after a long illness. A Oklahoma native, he lived in Highlands 23 years. Funeral at 2 pm today in Houston with burial in South Park Cemetery. Survivors include three sons William T John T and T O Sutterfield of Greens Bayou a step daughter Mrs Fannie Richardson a brother WR Sutterfield of Greens Bayou and two sisters Mrs George Richardson of Hinneiah Orlekone and Mrs Ed Arnold of Solphahoma.
Washington reports that General Motors halted sales of three 1951 makes after the Economic Stabilization Agency ordered cancellation of recent price increases and a return to December 1 levels. The President stated the law would be enforced and prices would revert to the agency's previously stated levels.
A newspaper note recalls the origin of silk stockings in Zurage, allegedly given as a Christmas gift to Queen Elizabeth by a court lady. The queen reportedly preferred silk thereafter, and the ad hints at Christmas stockings and a Sun Want Ad for funds.
