Ashbel Smith of Evergreen Linked Baytown to London in 1840s
Wanda Orton chronicles Dr. Ashbel Smith of Evergreen Plantation who served as Texas envoy to England in the 1840s, met Queen Victoria, and participated in the 1851 Great Exhibition and 1852 Texas state fair. The Texas delegate publicly praised wares, scolded medal rulings, and socialized with royalty despite personal impressions.
