U N K tempers flare as UN guards fight prisoners on island

In Korea on Tuesday commander George D. Miller described a clash on Pongam Island where UN troops fought to subdue Communist prisoners. He said about 84 prisoners and 118 others were injured, with four guards hurt. Prisoners reportedly sang and linked arms as they fought, delaying removal of the dead and wounded.

Lloyd Jones Elected Chamber President

Lloyd T. Jones, manager of the J C Penney Store in Baytown, was elected president of the Baytown Chamber of Commerce by the 30 member board. He succeeds Robert Strickland. The new officers will be installed Jan 26. Fred Hartman will be secretary and Roy Elms treasurer. Jones, born near Gatesville, and a long civic worker, served in the Army Air Corps and returned to Baytown to lead the Penney store.

Sunday afternoon the Wooster Volunteer Fire Department sells 25 cent rides to raise funds for the Goodfellows to buy Christmas gifts. He was found Sunday morning stripped of clothing and about $200 in a bifold along with two shirts and a portable radio missing from his car. Rescue of 39 Grommet Reefer crew ends in Leghorn harbor

In Leghorn Italy 39 sailors of the U S Navy cargo ship Grommet Reefer were saved after a two day rescue by U S Navy helicopters from carriers Midway and Leyte. The ship struck rocks and broke in two while carrying Christmas turkeys and cargo. Rescue teams used breeches buoy and boats. 23 initially rescued, final crew brought ashore by 4:05 p m local time.
