UTMB to honor burn unit founder with new gift drive
The Blocker Burn Unit, named for the surgeon who created the worlds first specialized burn unit after the 1947 Texas City explosion, received a new fundraising push at a UTMB press conference. Pastor John Riley recalled the blast and its aftermath while Dr. David Herndon outlined how the funds will advance adult burn care, training, and infection control. Rowe credited the gift with transforming tragedy into hope and urged donations to maximize BP matching gifts, referencing The Eva Bill to boost safety in the petrochemical industry.
