About 500 acres along Turtle Bayou and Lake Anahuac in Chambers County will be protected for future generations after the Chambers-Liberty Counties Navigation District completed a purchase with state and federal backing. The site includes wetlands, tidal waters, submerged lands, coastal shore areas, and hardwood and pine forests, aligning with goals to safeguard wildlife habitat water quality and rural heritage. County Judge Jimmy Sylvia notes the need to balance industry growth with green space for a quality living and working environment.
A longtime Baytown educator and community volunteer died at age 89. She taught 36 years in Baytown schools starting at Baytown Junior School and teaching American history at Sterling High School. She founded a young mothers program at Lee College and co started a Rice University scholarship. She tutored and recruited for Sterling Library literacy programs, founded the Widows Network, aided elder tax assistance, and served as election judge and legislative chair for Baytown.
