Dayton defeats Kerville 31 to 28 to reach the Class 4A Division II state championship, advancing on to face the winner of the other semifinal. The game featured a competitive finish as Dayton sealed the lead in the final minutes.
Local business owners organize a four act benefit concert in Lee College arena to raise funds for Hurricane Ike victims in Baytown. The event features Cory Morrow Sam Sliva The Bayou Big Band and Mean Gene Kelton with tickets on Ebay and through Baytown businesses. Aims to reach 500000 with ongoing fundraising efforts.
At Missouri Street Church of Christ the annual food drive gathered donations from residents and local businesses to aid families in need. Donna Dugat and her family, hit hard by Hurricane Ike, received help as volunteers loaded food into waiting vehicles. The event, in its 21st year, may assist 350 to 450 Baytonian families this season, with lines forming hours before distribution begins at 4 p.m. Volunteers require IDs, and organizers emphasize donations come entirely from the community.
The city will restart storm debris collection on January 5 for the month. A debris contractor and monitoring firm are engaged and FEMA funds are extended through this date. Debris must be sorted into four piles vegetation construction materials appliances and household hazardous materials with 8 foot pile limits and curb placement.
Two Robert E. Lee High School clubs FCCLA and TFTA spent Saturday collecting aid for hurricane victims. Students braved cold weather outside on Market Street directing drivers to a U Haul truck and gathering bags of clothes toys shoes games and gift cards for distribution.
Analie Garcia and her family benefit from the Baytown Goodfellows program run by Baytown Junior Forum under United Way. Donations to Goodfellows are tax deductible and fund toys for needy children. Contributions may be dropped at The Baytown Sun or mailed to Goodfellows P.O. Box 425 Baytown TX 77522.
