Bay Not Disastrous After Hi Port Fire
Spring Gully’s waters turned green and smelled of chemicals after the December Hi Port Industries fire. EPA and residents report no mass fish kill yet as large quantities of ethylene glycol and petrochemical wastes are being contained and cleaned. A flow structure and booms slow the spread while vacuum trucks suction wastes from the surface and workers wash vegetation along the banks. About 500,000 gallons of oil have been recovered in Spring Gully with crews moving upstream to continue cleanup and assess the long term impact.
