Shooting prompts more questions at Baytown college scene

Investigators say Baytown college student Robert Redus, 23, was shot Friday after allegedly attacking a University of the Incarnate Word officer with a steel baton. No dash cam video exists from the encounter, but audio recordings indicate a violent struggle. The Alamo Heights Police Department and Texas Rangers are reviewing the case.

Local educators honored by MANA Latina Leadership Institute

Seven local educators from Goose Creek CISD, Barbers Hill and Houston area schools were honored by MANA for leadership, service and advocacy. Language arts teacher motivates teen to finish education

Norma Picacio-Jones credits Patricia Sanders, her Harlingen High School language arts teacher, with transforming a pregnancy at 15 into perseverance. Though she did not return to high school, she earned a GED, then bachelor’s degrees in English and history from the University of Hawaii and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from Tarleton State University.

Family defends Cameron Redus after police shooting claim

The Redus family released a statement Monday denying that Cameron Redus attacked a police officer before his Friday death. They described him as a loving, intelligent young man beloved by his four brothers and said the family will struggle to adjust without him.

Bird count at Chevron Phillips plant marks holiday tally

Audubon Society volunteers survey the Chevron Phillips Cedar Bayou Plant grounds to count bird species during Christmas Bird Count. Led by Aaron Stoley for 25 years, the team walks refinery grounds and cooling ponds, tallying 65 to 70 species and noting regional diversity across Houston. Baytown’s first Harris County bomb shelter story

In 1955 Harold Crawford and two Baytown families built the county’s first bomb shelter in Crawford’s backyard. The 12 by 2 foot concrete vault with a thick roof, steel doors, and air pipes faced rain and soil challenges. Permits cost about 1,000 dollars, and neighbors helped. the project reflected postwar Cold War fears and local improvisation.
