Crosby School District Bond Election Vote Slow Morning

Rain slowed turnout in the Crosby School District bond election on Saturday with 426 votes cast by 11:40 am. The Crosby High School box reported 336 votes and Drew High School precinct 120 as ballots were still coming in.

Baytown Mayor Seaborn Cravey calls a meeting of prominent citizens to discuss the city’s needs and outline a tentative plan for a thorough study. Moody Foundation Grants 73000 To Lee College

Lee College received notice of a 73000 grant from the Moody Foundation of Galveston for reconstruction in Walter Burdell Hall. The project recreates 8364 square feet of space used as a Student Union, bookstore, counseling, and offices. The grant supports development of a career development center and information systems within the college.

REL Students Receive National Recognition

Jane Parker and Iris Harrington, high school students, earned national recognition in the 1967 NCTE Achievement Awards. Jane won a national award and Iris was a national runner-up, with their school Robert E. Lee High School receiving a certificate of merit from NCTE. The program honors top English students selected by their schools based on junior year performance in English, reading, and spelling.

Goodfellow Fund Seeks Final Holiday Donations

Chief Goodfellow thanks early supporters and urges more Baytonians to help fill Christmas bags for about 1000 underprivileged youngsters. With 2300 dollars still needed to reach 3000, volunteers will pick up toys December 2 and pack bags December 21 for distribution December 22 at the carpenters hall on Decker. Baytown Hit by Thunder Storm Rain Hail Debris

A fast moving cool front brought thunder lightning and hail to Baytown before dawn on Saturday. Rain gauges recorded about two to three inches with up to three inches at a local home gauge. Flash flooding and debris filled streets but no damage reported. Temperature dropped to the low sixties as the cold front was expected to intensify later Saturday night.

Drowned newborn found in area ditch near Baytown

A preliminary autopsy concluded a newborn found in a ditch near McKinney Road Baytown probably died by drowning. The infant, about seven inches long, was in three inches of water and had an umbilical cord cut and tied. The body showed animal bites and decomposition, with no identification or certainty on the mother, and the discovery followed another abandoned infant found a week earlier.

Expanded Dialing Brings 450000 Choices to Baytown Area

Baytown and Highlands will gain 43 000 micro telephones without long distance charges in a new expanded area service starting next Sunday. The Houston Central Zone and La Porte will be dialable direct with area codes and numbers. By April direct dial of all long distance calls and new services like person to person credit cards will be available, with touch tone dialing arriving in early 1969.

Two men in fatal Baytown burglary attempt

One man was killed and a second captured after a burglary attempt at Reynolds Outboard Motor Sales on West Main. The dead man was identified as Smitty Smith, 30, of New Jersey. James Robert Ingram, 38, of 2013 Wentworth in Pasadena, is in custody and charged with burglary andfelony theft. Reynolds and his wife confronted the intruders as police arrived around 3:07 a.m. Smith died at the scene. Ingram is being questioned with bond not set. The case will go to the Harris County Grand Jury.

Baytown Junior Forum Follies to Aid Palsy Center

The Baytown Junior Forum plans the Red Stocking Review February 2 and 3 to raise funds for a new Cerebral Palsy Center. Lee Brasfield chairs a $65,000 drive, with a $120,000 center cost and a federal grant match. Rehearsals start January 15 for a Sterling High auditorium show featuring 4% members and their families, with tickets at $2.50.

Bluebonnet Tickets Available At Sun

Baytown Sun offers Bluebonnet Bowl tickets next week at the paper office. The December 3 game at Rice Stadium features Miami vs Colorado with tickets $5.50. Proceeds benefit Baytown Opportunity School which recently received a $500 bowl gift to aid construction and facilities nearby.
