Orthodox Monastery at New Skete Converts in Upstate New York
In Cambridge New York the New Skete Monastery on Two Top Mountain draws thousands by its gold domes and Byzantine rite. Founded 1967 by 12 monks who left the Franciscan order, it became Orthodox in 1979 and now hosts 10 monks 10 nuns and about 55 parishioners traveling up to 100 miles for services. The community runs cheesecakes German shepherds and religious crafts as income and attracts visitors from Presbyterian areas. Father Laurence leads the renewal guided by early Christianity and Greek liturgy.
