Reagan hints at defense cuts in deficit plan

President Reagan signaled possible reductions to the Pentagon buildup as part of a broader deficit reduction package to Congress next year. He praised a Treasury tax simplification plan, defended against tax hikes, and indicated tentative domestic cuts for 1986 while keeping Social Security and debt interest off-limits. He also hinted at a potential one year freeze on Social Security increases.

Budget trimming could cost Texas millions in federal funds

A Texas official says Reagan’s 1986 budget plan could slash nearly 34 billion dollars in domestic programs, forcing cities and state governments to cover shortfalls. Losses include 250 million in revenue sharing, 200 million for community development, 21 million for urban grants, and 180 million for interstate highways, with oil revenue drops also looming.
